Swimming Goggles Guide - How To Care For Your Swimming Goggles
Our Absolute Golden Rule - Don't Touch Your Lenses
Do not touch the inner (or even outer) lens of your goggles with anything unless you are actively trying to reduce their visibility. The reasons are as follows:
1. Any dirt or natural oils from your fingers transferred to the lens will reduce the clarity of vision.
2. The contact of fingers, nails, rough cloth, or even general items in the swimming bag will cause tiny scratches on the lens. While this may not seem that serious, your eyes will be on these rather than the game. Not only is this distracting, it can even cause eye strain.
3. Wiping the inside of the lens with anything may damage the anti-fog coating and scratch the lens, causing the lens to become cloudy.
If you don't maintain your swimming goggles properly, this can lead to poor visibility in the water, which can lead to eye strain and fatigue - not what you want during or after a race or training session!
Why Are My Goggles Fogging Up?
Swimming goggles can "fog" when condensation forms inside the lenses. This condensation occurs due to water vapor in the skin or sweat. Shengbailong's goggles are treated with an anti-fog coating that helps reduce the amount of water that "sticks" to the lenses. Instead, this silicon coating allows water to slide off the lens.
However, anti-fog coatings can only prevent so much condensation. There are several reasons for this:
1. Anti-fog coatings degrade over time
2. If you wipe the inside of the lens, the anti-fog coating may be damaged
3. You're just producing too much moisture, which the anti-fog coating can't handle. This is common if you exercise or swim for long periods of time.
How Can I Minimize the Effects of Goggle Fogging?
Of course, even if you swim just for leisure, you can't stop yourself from producing sweat and water vapor. However, there are steps you can take to minimize its impact:
1. Make sure to put on the goggles when both you and the goggles are dry.
2. Spitting into the inside of the goggles (this may feel a little gross, but it's something many swimmers believe in).
3. Use an anti-fog spray every time you swim.
Anti-fog sprays contain hydrophobic solutions that repel water on goggle lenses, allowing it to run away instead of forming fog/fog. The anti-fog coating on Shengbailong goggles may start to degrade after prolonged use, so you may want to use an anti-fog spray before each swim. We found that lightly spraying a thin layer of anti-fog spray on the inner lens, then tilting the lens carefully to distribute the spray evenly, then rinse under the tap worked best. It may be necessary to do this before each swim for the best results.
How to Clean Swimming Goggles?
Swimming goggles are made up of three main parts: lenses, straps, and gaskets. We've told you never to touch the lenses, but you still need to clean your goggles to prolong their life and prevent standing water from damaging the straps and gaskets. Follow the tips below to clean your goggles without damaging the lenses.
Rinse
Gently rinse the goggles with cool water. This will help remove any pool chemicals such as chlorine (or salt water/sand leftover from open water swimming) which can damage your straps, gaskets, and lenses if left untreated. Remember to avoid touching the lenses! After rinsing thoroughly, shake to remove excess water, then allow to air dry out of direct sunlight.
Shoulder Strap
If you find that the strap needs extra cleaning, you can dip your fingers in soapy water and gently massage the strap. If possible, we recommend removing the strap if your goggles allow it. If not, make sure soapy water is kept away from the lens and gasket. After cleaning the straps, rinse them thoroughly with cold water, making sure to keep them away from the lenses and gaskets to prevent excess soap from damaging them. Shake again to remove excess water, and let air dry out of direct sunlight.
Deep Cleaning
If your goggles are too dirty for basic rinsing to work, you can try white wine vinegar to remove dirt and other deposits:
1. Fill a bowl or (clean) sink with hot tap water and add 5 tablespoons of white wine vinegar.
2. Submerge the goggles in water, making sure to avoid touching the lenses.
3. Soak the goggles for 2 hours, then remove them from the solution and rinse immediately with cool, fresh water.
4. Gently shake the goggles to remove excess moisture and allow them to air dry completely before putting them away.
Tips for cleaning and storing sun-dried goggles
what should be done
- Gently rinse goggles after each use to prevent chlorine and salt water/debris from damaging goggles
- Please store goggles in a separate bag or box to prevent them from being damaged in the bag
- Be sure to let Glass dry completely before putting it away
what not to do
- If you haven't heard us say it before - don't touch your lenses with anything
- Do not expose goggles to direct sunlight or excessive heat - this may deform or damage the gaskets and age the straps causing them to break prematurely
- Do not store wet goggles - this may lead to mold or limescale buildup
- Don't just throw goggles in your gear bag - they can get damaged or scratched
Properly caring for your goggles and handling them as little as possible will prolong the life of your goggles and help you get the most out of your training. If you want to know more about swimming goggles or you want to buy swimming goggles, please contact us.
